COPAA
overview
Translating Legal Rigor Into Human Connection
Founded nearly three decades ago by volunteer attorneys, the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) is now a 3,700+ member network of parents, advocates, attorneys, and allies who defend the rights of students with disabilities and hold systems accountable. COPAA partnered with Friday to reflect that evolution and help every member claim their “why” and invest in the mission.
challenge
Members know COPAA as a year-round movement: peer mentorship, policy wins, and amicus briefs that shape case law. Newcomers often saw an annual conference. And while members agreed on the mission, not everyone saw themselves in the story. Parents weren’t sure COPAA was for them, organizations weren’t sure what they were supporting, and advocates couldn’t always name their role. Certain members also had both capacity and desire to contribute more to COPAA, but didn’t recognize investment (beyond membership fees) as a pathway to deeper engagement.
insight
Members come to COPAA for information, but they stay because the organization’s people become a lifeline. In one member’s words, COPAA threw them a “life preserver” when they were in over their heads. COPAA’s members empower each other: trained advocates expand attorney capacity, and families bring lived expertise that strengthens litigation and legislation. Leading with expertise alone undersold that.
solution
Friday anchored COPAA’s story in a battle-tested promise: where the movement for education equity finds its strength. That promise unites every audience, and tailored messaging shows each what it looks like in unique contexts. Editable website, social media, one-pager, and slide deck templates made this vivid story immediately easy to share, across channels, including an end-of-year campaign asking for donations beyond dues.
"They guided us through complex conversations with calm clarity, helping us to find the right voice and powerful messaging to convey COPAA's mission and value.”
