From Fragmented Story to Shared Throughline

overview

Making a Complex System Legible

Spartanburg Academic Movement aligns the county's education, community, and workforce systems, so every child gets support from before birth to a stable career. As a member of the national StriveTogether Cradle-to-Career Network, SAM's work reflects a scale of ambition shared by communities across the country. As SAM's reach grew across five Centers and a dozen initiatives, the organization’s staff, partners, and funders struggled to hold the full picture. Friday partnered with SAM to build a communications strategy that could simplify that complexity without losing its sophistication.

Staff could describe their own program with confidence, but not SAM's work as a whole. Only 4 of 28 of surveyed staff felt sure explaining programs outside their own lane. Community partners similarly struggled to describe SAM’s role in simple terms and miscategorized the organization as a funder rather than the strategist “holding the throughline.”
The gap in understanding wasn't due to a lack of content. SAM already had reports, frameworks, and data in abundance. What was missing was shared language; a way for a kindergarten teacher, a policymaker, and a college president to describe the organization in simple terms. More frameworks wouldn’t create clarity; a cohesive story would.
Friday built SAM a messaging system that gives every part of its story a home: Our Role, Where We Focus, and What Makes It Possible. Separating what SAM does from where it works and what supports it turned a sprawling story into one anyone can tell. Anchored by the idea that SAM holds the throughline, it speaks plainly to every audience, from families to funders. An accompanying storytelling framework and staff training turned that idea into realistic communications practice.

"I'm more confident than I've been since I've been here in how our staff talk about SAM. The thing I heard most, from directors and managers down to coordinators, was 'we don't know what to say.' Everyone on our team needed the tools to explain what each Center does and what SAM does as a whole. Now they have that. It's structured to grow with us too."
